The beginning · 2018
Where does one begin? Let us go back in time.
For over 15 years, I had the profound privilege of teaching pupils with Severe and Complex Learning Difficulties in an Inner London Special Needs School. I poured everything I had into that calling — my passion, my drive, my very self. I chased excellence relentlessly, climbing to the highest level of influence my school could offer, championing the advancement of every student who passed through my classroom.
And yet, for all that love and commitment, I eventually reached a point of deep exhaustion. Burnt out and dangerously close to personal breakdown, I found myself wrestling with a question I could no longer avoid: Was I still doing what I was truly called to do?
As a Christian, I brought that question before God. His answer came through a single, striking verse of scripture:
"Watch this: I'm bringing the breath of life to you and you'll come to life… You'll come alive and you'll realise that I am God!"
Ezekiel 37:5–6
Through many tearful conversations with God, I felt an unmistakable prompting: be brave. Take a leap of faith. Step away from my career and allow Him to restore me. It was a daunting, deeply difficult decision — and yet I knew, with quiet certainty, that it was from Him.
Those who know me well have always affectionately called me a 'Protective Mother Hen' — ever caring for others, but rarely allowing others to care for me. This season was different. It was time to surrender, to rest in God's nest of care, and to let Him breathe new life into my dry bones.
And in that surrender, Breathe Life Designs was born.
Once I began to see what God was doing in my life, I felt an irresistible urge to reflect it through creativity. As He was breathing new life into me, I found myself wanting to breathe new life into everything my hands touched. I began upcycling old furniture, reimagining discarded pieces, and crafting entirely new things from reclaimed raw materials — each one a small act of transformation and renewal.
An unexpected detour · February 2020
Stranded — but not without purpose.
What began as a much-needed month-long visit to family in South Africa quickly turned into an extended, unplanned stay. Within weeks of my arrival, a National Lockdown was declared in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and repatriation flights home to the United Kingdom came at a prohibitive cost. Like so many across the world, life as I had known it ground to an abrupt halt.
Being stranded far from home was not without its gifts, though. I soon realised just how deeply I missed creating — and how unable I was to continue serving my UK clients in the way we were all accustomed to. The handmade crafts, the upcycled furniture, the Etsy shop — all of it was, for now, on hold.
So, one evening, almost on impulse, I enrolled in an online Graphic Design course. I had always enjoyed playing with logos and visual ideas — this felt like the natural next step. A new skill set. Another egg in the basket. An investment in myself and in the future reach of my business.
The present
The adventure continues.
I am delighted to share that I have since completed a Diploma in Graphic Design — and I am utterly thrilled to have discovered just how much I love this new branch of creativity. Every day brings something new to learn, something new to explore, and I feel genuinely blessed to be doing work that lights me up.
Breathe Life Designs continues to grow and evolve — an ongoing adventure that I am passionate about building, one beautifully unique project at a time.
I hope that somewhere within these pages, you find something that speaks to you — something that breathes new life into you as a person, into your home, or into your business.
May God bless you as abundantly as He blesses me — through the simple, profound joy of designing something beautifully unique.
